May 2010 Field Trip to Grayson Allen Fine Jewelers

The YES! group had their field trip to Grayson Allen Fine Jewelers in Southlake.  The kids got an inside view on the jewelry business from owners Keary Turner and Andy Ramirez!  Grayson Allen is the name of Keary’s first child!

What the kids got most out of our trip is how important intergrity and a good reputation are in any business.  His relationships are why he got involved with the jewelry business and are also what keeps him IN business.   Grayson Allen is a huge supporter of local charities.  Keary is on the board of the Kiwanis of Southlake, is involved in his church and is a wonderful business owner who leads by example.  Our thanks to Grayson Allen for the wonderful field trip!

Wow… are we proud of Southlake’s own Katie Unkle!  Her Nnon-profit business “Cakes 4 A Cause”  is a featured story on the local news show!  And we are proud to have Katie as a member of our Young Entrepreneurs of Southlake!  We just want to give Katie and her family a “pat on the back” and say “Thank You” for all you do…

Here is the article as it appears on NBCDFW.com’s website:

A Southlake teenager is tackling autism, one chocolate velvet torte at a time.

Katie Unkle, 15, is whipping up more than just chocolate cake in her family’s Southlake kitchen. She has one specialty: her grandmother’s delicious chocolate velvet torte. And the cake is her preferred weapon against autism.

“I don’t think that people realize how frequently kids are diagnosed with autism and how many of them there are,” she said.  “And they don’t get as much support as people with other disabilities do.”

She makes and sells the cakes to raise money for autism research.

“Because right now, there’s no detection or cure at all,” she said.

Katie is both the brains and the manpower behind Cakes 4 a Cause, a nonprofit she founded when she was 14. The inspiration is her older brother, 18-year-old Ben, a high school senior who was diagnosed with autism at age 6.

“She’s watched him be mistreated when she went to school with him and thought that it was really sad that such a sweet person would be mistreated by people just because they were unaware of what he was dealing with,” said their mother, Barbara Unkle. A very special ~thank you~ also goes out to the Southlake Kiwanis.  We had the priviledge of having the President of The Southlake Kiwanis, Mr. Curtis Green, attending our meeting.  A very special donation of $500. was presented by Mr. Green to the YES! organization to assist in our startup!  We are truly appreciative to Mr. Green & The Southlake Kiwanis for this very generous gift!  The $500 will be going to the YES!  College Scholarship program!!
